How
Therapy Works
Let’s Get to Work!
Congratulations on taking the first step towards finding a therapist who can help you achieve your goals! Getting started can feel overwhelming. But don't worry – Undiscovered Potential is here to simplify the process for you and help you understand what to expect.
Initial Consultation
At Undiscovered Potential, we invite all prospective clients to schedule a 15-20 minute free consultation call with our therapist prior to booking a therapy session. During the call, the therapist will:
Provide information about our practice, techniques, and therapeutic style
Answer any questions you may have about confidentiality.
Ask about the events that led you to seek therapeutic services.
It's important to ensure you're in a private location during this call to protect your privacy. However, please note that the consultation is not a full therapy session, but rather a brief summary of your situation. The goal of the consultation is to help you determine if our services can address your goals.
If you decide to proceed with therapy after the consultation, our therapist will guide you through the next steps. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals.
Post Consultation
At Undiscovered Potential, we take great care in creating client profiles. Your privacy and confidentiality are our top priority, and your client files are only accessible to your therapist.
If you decide to move forward with therapy at Undiscovered Potential, your therapist will ask for your contact information and send you intake paperwork. This paperwork contains important information about our policies, confidentiality, fees, and your rights as a client. We understand that this may feel overwhelming, but your therapist is always available to answer any questions you may have throughout the process.
Once you've signed and reviewed the intake paperwork, it's time to schedule your first therapy session! Your therapist will work with you to find a convenient date and time, and can send appointment reminders via phone and/or email.
When selecting a time for your session, we recommend considering your schedule and making sure you have time for self-care afterwards. Therapy sessions require emotional presence and can be taxing, so it's important to prioritize your well-being.
First Session
Your first therapy session is an important step in your journey towards achieving your goals.
During this initial session, your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine the goals that brought you into therapy. Whether you want to improve communication with your spouse or develop a greater awareness of your emotions, your therapist will help identify your objectives.
To gain a comprehensive understanding of your unique situation, your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment of factors that may be influencing your goals.
These factors may include:
your family history of mental illness
past therapy experiences
what you're currently doing that is working for you
what you've tried in the past to get closer to your goals
It's important to note that initial therapy sessions are typically focused on gathering historical information, while subsequent sessions are more action-oriented.
Your therapist will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan to help you achieve your objectives in a precise manner. You can trust that your therapist will provide a supportive, empathetic environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your concerns and working towards your goals.
Progress In Therapy
Therapy is not always easy, but it can be one of the most valuable investments you make in yourself.
By taking the time to focus on your mental health and well-being, you can create lasting positive change in your life. It's important to remember that therapy is not a quick fix, but rather a journey that requires effort and commitment. We often tell our clients that they will get out of therapy what they put into it.
By actively participating in therapy sessions, being open and honest with your therapist, and implementing the strategies and techniques discussed in your sessions, you can see real progress towards your goals. While it may be challenging at times, it's important to trust the process and have patience with yourself as you work towards creating positive change.
It's also worth noting that as you change and grow through therapy, the world around you may change as well. You may find that your relationships and interactions with others shift as you become more self-aware and learn new ways of communicating and navigating challenges. Embracing this change can be difficult, but it can also lead to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
Therapy is a journey that requires effort and commitment, but can result in long-lasting positive change in your life. Remember to trust the process, actively participate in your sessions, and be patient with yourself as you work towards achieving your goals.
